Bettendorf Wins Iowa 4-A Title


Bettendorf needed a late fourth quarter touchdown to win Iowa's 4-A high school football championship.

Top-ranked Bettendorf (13-0) beat Ankeny 21-16 when quarterback Danny Tharp hit Billy Rembold with a 19-yard touchdown pass with :12 left in the game. Ankeny had taken a 16-14 lead on a 17 yard field goal by Zach Ryan with 2:26 to go in the game.

The championship is the seventh for Bettendorf.

Iowa Passing Records Fall in 3-A Semifinal


It was a big night for Keokuk quarterback James Vandenberg, who not only set several new Iowa passing records, but also led his school to its first state championship game.

Keokuk beat South Tama 28-14 in a 3-A semifinal on Monday to advance to Saturday's championship title against Heelan from Sioux City.

Vandenberg threw for 393 yards in the game and three touchdowns to take over the Iowa record for yards in a season (3,509) and a career (7,481) and touchdown passes in a season (46) and career (90).

Part Deux for Solon and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock In Iowa High School Football Championship Game


For the second straight year Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (12-0) will play Solon (12-0) for the Iowa Class 2-A state football championship.

Top-ranked and defending champ Central Lyon/George-Little Rock beat Carroll Kuemper 35-0 in a Monday semifinal match-up at the UNI Dome. CL/GLR quarterback Nate DeJong tossed three touchdown passes.

Carroll Kuemper finished the season 11-2.

Solon Returns To Iowa 2-A Championship Game


For the second year in a row, Solon will play for the Iowa Class 2-A high school football championship.

Solon beat North Fayette of West Union 28-7 in a state semifinal match-up Monday at the University of Northern Iowa Dome. Solon was led by James Morris and Colin Sleeper, who each scored two touchdowns while combining for 194 yards rushing.

Solon will play the winner of the second 2-A semifinal matching Central Lyon against George-Little Rock. Last year, George-Little Rock beat Solon 16-7 for the state championship.
